I am considering planting herbacious clematis to scramble through my Iris beds so they don't look quite so bare in the summer - but I'm wondering how to best protect the clematis roots when I do it because of having to lift the Iris every few years. I really appreciate the help.
And does anyone have a favorite non-clinger?
Planting Iris with Clematis?
I wouldn't combine herbaceous Clematis with Irises that need to be dug and divided every couple of years. I don't think that the Clematis vine would appreciate having its roots disturbed once it become established.
I like C. Alionushka, which scrambles through some Hostas. Hopefully, I'll get more blooms from her next year!
Thanks. C. Alionushka is lovely. Now, how to keep it planted away from my Iris rhizomes.
