Hi all. I'll be doing a large amount of JM seed harvesting this year but I can't seem to figure out when is the best time to harvest. Should the wings be turning from green to brown, yellow? Should the tree start dropping some before harvesting? Anyone know what are the indicators of seed that is ready for pickin'? Any guidance is appreciated! Thanks.
Seed Harvest timing & indicators
Hi... The best place for this info is J. D. Vertrees book titled Japanese Maples available at Amazon for $32.97 including shipping... I don't think you'll find it USED cause it's the bible of all JM growers and they would never sell it .... It has complete instructions on seed propagation....but as others have said seed don't necessarily propagate the parent tree so what you get will most likely be a mongrel tree which might be better worse or worthless???...But growing seed for root stock to graft onto is an acceptable method according to many growers...
