What to plant in shallow containers?

Orange, CA(Zone 10b)

Hi, folks. What can I plant in a small, round, shallow plastic container? It has a terra cotta look, 10" diameter, 4" depth. I'm looking for any and all ideas, but especially something appropriate for fall and winter gift-giving. Thanks.

My mom had some adorable cacti in a shallow dish, I believe it was a terra cotta saucer. They lived for years in there, indoors. That would be appropriate for gift giving (wouldn't it?)
Can we see the containers?

A tip: Shallow containers have a much higher percentage of saturated soil than tall containers. It is increasingly important that drainage/aeration increases as container depth decreases.

Good tip, Al. Thanks.

Cacti is a great idea, butterqueen. I need to learn more about them, though.

Here's are a couple of pics of the bowl.

Looks perfect for sedums and semps and can stay outdoors.
