New Dykes Medal winner announced.

Stanford, CA(Zone 9b)

Rick Tasco was just awarded the 2005 Dykes medal for his 'Splashacata". It's in the plantfiles at:

The Dykes medal is the highest award given an Iris and it is awarded only once a year. Quite an accomplishment. If you'd like to find out more about how the awards are done you can find it here. It's quite a process!

Having your own creation honored when you've been hybridizing Iris for years - and a lot of other wonderful people have too - is an amazing thing. It's really hard work, a lot of knowledge and a lot of the divine.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Are you hybridizing too, Doss?

Stanford, CA(Zone 9b)

No, but I've always done some kind of art. Hybridizing seems even more mystical to me. Somehow there's understanding the genetics of color and texture and form, bud count, height, strength of stem. The need to know it works generally and then which flowers give which characteristics. And then there is the element of what you can't control surprising you all of the time. Also true in any kind of art.

It's a good thing to stand in awe of nature every once in awhile. This was just today's reminder for me I guess. Well that and seeing a new Dahlia in a glass vase next to my bed, a daylily blooming, or my grandchildren learn about the world....... Just Amazing.

I'm happy for you louise. I can see your smile from here. :-)

Schreiner's was nice enough to put a big announcement on their site. They have a cultivar that was a runner up. A bi-colored blue but OOPs, as usual can't remember the name.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 7a)

It was 'World Premier'. Here's a link to the picture of it.

Wonder why you lost World Premier? I had to ask Schreiner's to send me another Abiqua Falls this summer. Mine only got about 9 inches tall. It may bloom next year - but I want to get a happy one. They were very kind.

Are you trying World Premiere again?

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Don't know yet. It is a beauty and would love to have it, maybe someone will trade??????!!!!!!!!!
