Volunteer petunia

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

I've never planted petunia, nor do I have any seeds. However, I do have a hanging basket of the mini petunias in hot pink. What is curious is that in the garden below the basket, some regular-sized lavender-ish petunia plants are growing. Coincidence, or no? Tamara

Tamara, did you have petunias near that location LAST year? I have had petunias to self seed and come up the following year. Usually petunias don't start to set seed until late in the summer, so I would be surprised if your hanging basket is responsible for your volunteers.

No, I've actually never had petunias. I also thought it would be odd that it would be from the container. Maybe some birds or squirrels helped out. ;-) Tamara

This year I have a bed that had petunias in it for 3 years, then pansys in the fall. Didn't have any petunias there last year. This year I sowed wildflowers, and lo and behold I have petunias and pansys that came up volunteer. Never had pansys do that before.
