What happened to my Sedum!? HELP!!!

Troy, IL(Zone 6a)

Ok, I planted this in the spring. It was moving along so nicely. DH got rid of the tag so I have no idea what kind it is.

We have had a ton on rain this week and today after work I checked my pond for the first time this week and look what was up with my baby!

Do you think it is too much rain? How can half an area die in 4 days?

Tell me what to do!!

Sorry that happened. How sad((:-((

Next time, before you plant sedum, incorporate half sand into the planting area, mixed with good soil or topsoil: they need good drainage.

Thank you Pirl for the advice and the sympathy. It just amazes me that it happened so fast. I will get some sand and transplant it. Maybe some will survive and will spread again. :)

So sorry about your sedum. Mine of that type grows mostly in gravel (it went there on its own) and I have to walk on it to traverse the garden, so I can testify to its resilient nature. I feel sure it will come back as long as the area you put it in isn't soggy.

In the center and edges, the dead foliage looks different. More like maybe a broadleaf weed was in there. Did someone try nuking some weeds? Maybe used roundup vice weedbegone? Even then, if weedbegone is a concentrated mix or you saturate the area, you can kill or make desirable plants sick. Yes.. I'm guilty as charged. :)

8ftbed,

Thanks for trying! I have not used any weedkiller. The rain is the culprit. This morning I found a white mold on the plants so I dug up the whole area and threw it out. Scooped out about 2 inches of dirt. Since it is raining out now, it will not get better. I just hope that mold is gone.

I am gonna have to watch that area really close. Oh well, these things happen.

I think it bothers me most because I am a fairly new gardener with a pretty good track record for not loosing plants. Only one did not survive after planting it. (I dont count the pond lilies because the dang fish ate the leaves, so it is not my fault lol)

You did the right thing by removing the soil in the wet spot, with the mold on it. Good luck in the future!

Thanks Pirl.

I wonder if I go out there with my blowdryer and zap that area if that would work. LOL Hahahahahaha. Image what the neighbors would think!!!!

The rain has been great for the farmers tho. I can almost see the corn growing.

I was vacuuming the front hall one day and had the front door open and through the glass storm door I noticed a mess of tiny leaves, soil, etc. on the wide front landing and steps. I positioned the door open and went out with the vacuum and did everything. Three neighbors passed and they still talk about how I vacuum the outdoors!

LOL!!! Now THAT would be a funny site. They probably think you have OCD.......hmmmmm dont most of us daylily growers have OCD?! Seems like it.

It really feels that way in springtime! OCD is better than a lot of other initialled ailments like TMJ, etc.

You are too right. The worst would be ED!!!!! LOL

They have Viagara for that and other medicines, too. A friend of ours lives in the Poconos and gets them from his girlfriend's daughter, who is a nurse. She takes the samples. Now he's gotten to splitting them in half and he loves Cialis best: two for one as he says! He just turned 78 and loves life.

LOL!! I bet he does. Good for him.

Maybe a Viagra would help the Sedum rise up???

Troy, IL(Zone 6a)

LOL!!!! It just might but wouldnt it add more "moisture"?

Did I miss something about your sedum? You mentioned the pond.... if this is planted in a wet area to begin with, that could be a problem.

Sedums are in the succulent family. I think I have this same Sedum. It loves to be high and dry, It doesn't like getting sopping wet.

I can grow this stuff by just mulching an area with broken pieces, and it takes off!

Try picking out the good parts of what you have left, and replant in a raised area, or elevating it in a mound.

Thanks Mel! I guess you live and learn. I did save a couple pieces and moved them to a pond plant container.....has holes all over it. I will watch it and see what happens before I move it to a higher place.
