Squash Vine Borers

Ringgold, GA(Zone 8a)

Can you tell me what Bt is? I've been dealing with these things for the last few years and didn't know what was killing my squash and cucumbers until last year when I read an article in the paper. I thought it was my mother-in-law. Our garden is in their back yard. Shame on me. I had one plant die already. It was in bad shape almost from the start, like they were just laying there waiting for me to plant again. Help!!!!!!

Bt is the easy-to-pronounce abbreviation for Baccilus thuringiensis: http://davesgarden.com/terms/go/52.html

Most lawn/garden centers will probably carry several Bt-based products. Ask them if you don't see any on the shelf with other insecticides.

Others here can better guide you, but I don't think the powder-based stuff is effective once the infestation has begun. However, if you're up for the challenge, you can look for the grubs, kill 'em, mound soil over the wounds and keep your fingers crossed the vines can outgrow the damage.

As Terry said Bt ( Thiricide, Dipel, Caterpillar Killer etc) is effective on Vine borers only when injected into the infested stem. It is a stomach poison, the larvae have to eat it, and vine borers eat from the inside of the stem.
