Nothing special. I just let it grow and only trim it when it's too wild. I don't prune it back much at all. But I think I will this year. It's gotten too wild. It needs to be cut back some.

Stretchworth - which variety are you referring to? Have you fertilized it at all? Is it kept moist or has it been allowed to dry out? Did you plant the Clematis when it was a baby vine or when it had enough roots to fill a 1 gallon container? Have you cut it back at all? All these factors go into growing a mature vine that will reward you with a large flush of flowers.
