Friend or Foe on Butterfly Bush

Gas, KS

I was deadheading my butterfly bush and I found this little black bugs all over in the flower part of my butterfly bush. What are they and will they harm my plant or the butterflies that are coming to the bush.

Thanks!

I wish I could tell you, Kelli, but I unfortunately can't see any details on the bug. I can't even tell where its head is. If you have a good mental picture of it, you might try this website. It has guides that you can browse with pictures of all sorts of bugs.

Hello,

I tried to take a picture of them but they are small black round bugs. They burrow into the flower and if I deadhead the spent flower and put it on the ground they move so fast that i can't take a picture of them. Thanks for posting that website. I really appreciate it.

Try taking a piece from the bush that you've cut and shake it unto a white sheet of paper that has a small dab or two of elmers glue. The bugs that land on it should stay long enough for a quick snapshot. That might help to ID the insects.
