Flowers on Container Cucumbers

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi All,

I have planted cucumbers for the first time this year and I'm wondering if you are supposed to pinch off the flowers when they first appear. Will that encourage the plant to produce more cukes? Also how large or a container should I have to plant two or three cucumbers in one container? Right now I have two in a ten gallon container. I forget what kind of cukes they are but I'm pretty sure they're not one of the varieties recommended for containers.

Thanks so much
Nicole

Sounds like your container is fine for 2 cukes, and don't pinch the blooms...some are male and some are female, and you need both to produce fruit. Give them as much sun as possible and water deeply and regularly. Bee activity is good for fruit production, and by the way, welcome to DG!

Thanks so much for your advice Melody.
I found a two great articles online that I'd like to pass along to the DG community. The first is at http://www.garden.org/subchannels/landscaping/containers?q=show&id=318 After reading it I finally understood the pollination process and the difference between gynoecious and monoecious plants. I also found an article about how to hand pollinate cucumbers at http://pollinator.com/hand_pollination2.htm which was helpfull.

Cheers,
Nicole
