Painting pots?

San Jose, CA

I was inspired by an English book that showed all kinds of interesting paints used on ordinary terracotta pots. They keep talking about using masonry paint, though, which I'm not familiar with. The masonry paint they mention had some really interesting colors, ranging from stone-like to warm browns.

What is the best type of paint to use if you're going to leave pots outside? I don't want the paint bleeding onto the decking in my yard. And, I'm looking for something with a wide range of colors.

Any suggestions? Any photos of pots you've done?
