or removing old flowers do you leave the spent flower stalk or take it off at the base?

I take off at the base.

Me too, but I just take it back to the branching if the other flowers are still good.

Just want to add that if you let the flowers die off naturally, the whole flower spike will dry up. No reason to keep the stalks if there are no buds left on them.

Ok, whew! Good cause that's what I was doing too LOL! Thanks for answering everyone!

Good information to know- great question Tammy! I always just tugged gently and took whatever I got- stem or just spent flowers.
Although one time I got the whole crown of the plant- oh my horror! I just put it on some moist soil in another pot and it rooted like nothing happened...thats when I realized my av's were a tiny bit forgiving. :) Needless to say..I get a pair of nail scissors and have the precision of a surgeon when cutting spent bloom stalks now. lol Susanne
