Nice irises, all, Scooterbug, but you need to check your IDs on ART SHOW and CHAMPAGNE ELEGANCE. You can see good examples of the accurately identified AS in the PDB (zacattack's pic is particularly good). Yours, I'm afraid, doesn't match.
Although your CE is in the same color class as the real CE, it has a much older, more tailored form than the real thing. CE has modern, ruffled form with pretty much horizontal falls. Again, you can view pics of the real thing in the PDB.

Beautiful Iris!!!!

I wouldn't trust the identity of any iris purchased from a "mart" or large retail store like Home Depot or Lowe's. These retailers purchase irises in bulk color lots and then package and label them with the name of any popular registered iris in the same color class. Lots of times they don't even bother to label them with an iris of the same color. They just seem to pick any old name and photo out of a hat and slap them on the bags of irises for sale. Many of the mart irises are actually unregistered, culled seedlings from large iris hybridizers. Bottom line is, you never know what might bloom from a mart rhizome or whether it will look even remotely like what you thought you were buying.
Mart irises are fine as landscape plants, and many of them are perfectly lovely irises, but IMO they should only be grown as unknowns and NEVER traded or gifted to anyone with the mart name attached.

ah yes , so I am learning.
I stopped buying from big box stores last year after Wanda clued me in on the shenanigans going on with them.
Thanks , I'll treat CE as I would any unnamed plant that happens to be a fav.
I will look for the real CE soon and give these away as unk's
I'm afraid you've got MY GINNY mislabeled, too. Check the PDB.
Yikes, MONTEVIDEO isn't right, either.
hmmmmmm, got that one from a Co-Op here.
Thanks
You know I'm really feeling good about this that I will not be passing on any bad or wrongly named iris.
The same way I feel about my brugmansias.
I got it now.
I promise to check for correct ID's before posting in the future.
(lesson learned)
I hope you didn't take any of my corrections as criticisms or an attempt to restrict your postings in any way. I just like to avoid confusion wherever possible so folks don't go out looking for the same iris you're growing and end up with something different.
I like to double check IDs by first referencing the AIS registered descriptions, then finding as many photos as possible online to compare to my own. I've found half a dozen mislabeled irises in my own beds this year!
Laurie
do you have a link to this 'AIS registered descriptions' that you speak of?
At www.irisregister.com you can access 1960-1989 for free via download or pay $10 year and get up to 1999. The other option is to get the Checklist print version by the American Iris Society.
