SIberian Iris Help

Rockford, IL(Zone 4b)

I have several small clumps of siberian iris that were planted by the previous owners of our house. I need to move them. The trees have filled in over the years, and most of them are now in full shade. I got a whopping one little bloom this year.

When is the best time?

Also, I've heard that these can be used as a bog plant - can I plant them at the pond edge? If so, in the water or just at the margin?

If you can dig enough of the surrounding soil with the root balls to minimize root disturbance, you might be able to get away with moving them now. If you're going to try to move them bareroot, you should do so in late summer-early fall when temps cool off or wait till first thing in spring just as they break dormancy and begin active growth. Whenever you move them, keep them well mulched and watered for the first couple of months to help them settle in and reroot.

Sibs can be planted at pond's edge, but they should NOT be planted IN water.
