Moss in containers

New York, NY(Zone 7a)

I have a couple of containers that I thought were getting plenty of sun and not too much water -- my California poppies were happy enough to bloom and self-seed -- but this year they're full of moss. What does this mean? I guess I can dump out the soil (and the poppy seedlings) and start fresh, but I'd like to know how to prevent this in other containers. Thanks for any clues!

Some folks would kill for moss to cover the soil in containers in a shade garden!

I second that.Don't dump it.I think it looks great.

Good point. I'm going to make a shade bed and top it with the moss.
