Do worms heal?

N., CA(Zone 9a)

I have the biggest fattest worms in my border, and I cant strike my shovel without cutting one in half. I feel terrible. My dh said the 2 halves live on, but I think he's only trying to make me feel better. Is there any truth to that?

Earthworms do indeed heal, but only one part survives. If it is cut through the vital organs no parts survive. I'm sorry to cast a cloud over the wive's tale, however worms are not invincible...lol. Be encouraged that a part often does survive and that if you are growing the fatties you claim to be growing they are also reproducing. Your rewards will continue because earthworms have three priorities, eating, pooping, and makin' babies....not necessarily in that order. Where you see one healthy worm there are many, where you see many worms, there are even more. So shovel away, light a candle if you must, but whatever you're doing to create such healthy plows for your soil is RIGHT...lol.

Be well,
Don
