I have a single bulb I got in a trade in early spring. I'm not sure but I'm wondering whether I even planted it the right way. Which way is up??

Bletillas are growing from corms. If you didn't see any obvious direction when you planted it, I wouldn't worry about it. I would think the growth will find its proper orientation.
Morning sun is fine.
