I live in the country - I have horses, ducks, etc - I have flies - I'm used to it.
I use fly predator wasps for control around manure piles, nesting areas, and around garbage cans however, I am perplexed by one thing going on here........
In my front beds I have an area that is basically a bird bath surrounded by Autumn Joy Sedum and about 3 feet away from a small rock garden I've just started and that WHOLE area is swarming with black flies (I think they're like the common black housefly variety). I don't know why they are there - except maybe they like sleeping down in the rocks and there's a water source.
Checking out my Sedum today it looked like they were covered with black aphids - only looking closer I discovered the black dots were fly spot (fly poo).
I put out a fly trap (the kind with stinky water in it) and have caught about 200 flies just today.
I dumped some of my fly predators down in the rocks to see if they would help - but I won't know for a few weeks.
So - any clues as to why they've moved in here? I had no flies around any of my Sedum last year or on those growing in other parts of the bed. Any idea what I should do??? -C
Flies flies and more flies!
