New at container gardening too

Dansville, NY(Zone 6a)

just stoped at the local saw mill here and got some prices on some
1x12 to build some raised boxes for some veggies and herbs.
then on the way home i stop at a landscaping store thats just starting
up here in town, this will be there 2nd year and they have added alot
of new stuff like Top Soil buy the pickup truck load. wooohoooooooo...
now i dont have to drive 2 towns away to get some and the price good
for my wallet. 17 bucks a load.

Now the questions...

What should i add to the Top Soil ?

cow poop , horse poop , humas , peatmoss ?

should i get some small rocks and drop in the bottom of
the boxes also for drainage ?

Im planing on doing up like 4 , 4x4 boxes and one 4 x 8

The only location i can put them will be in the side lawn (trailer park)
they will catch morning sun and evening sun. big maple tree might
block some of the noon time after noon sun for a few hours.

HI VbSparky~
I am new to gardening, and this year started some raised beds. The Square Foot Method suggests using about 1/3 topsoil, 1/3 compost or manure or mix, 1/3 mix of peat moss, vermiculite, sand. I have been happy with this mix so far. Doesn't dry out too fast, but also, after 6 inches of snow and heavy rains last week, nothing seems water logged.... and no rocks in the bottom. Although with some of the beds, the soil looked packed, so I took the time to double dig (ugh!) before putting the bed frames down.
I brought home a pickup bed/trailer load of top soil ($30 per 1/2 cu. yd.), and am almost out. But I have to drive 110 miles to get some more... lucky you :-)
