I have a customer with a narrow bed (barely 3' deep) in a pool area and they want an evergreen tree. There is a gate a foot or two from this area so I need something that won't come out into the entrance area. The problem is finding a plant that fits the space and is also commercially available!
I am considering the following:
Juniperus chinensis 'Torulosa'; Hollywood Juniper
Isn't there a very narrow form of Cedrus deodara??? I see them but don't know the cultivar name
Chamaecyparis species...Anyone know which cultivars have a nice form and remain tight at the bottom?
Need answer ASAP...Thanks!!!
Help...Need a narrow upright evergreen tree for narrow bed
Not sure the deodar cedar is hardy less thasn Zone 7. If you find one, please let me know!
I have 2 different junipers that are VERY narrow - JUniperus scopularum 'Sparkling Skyrocket', Juniperus sabina 'Moonglow', and also there's Juniperus sabina 'Skyrocket' (not as sparkling!) Musser Forests has Skyrocket at this link http://www.musserforests.com/browse.asp?m=1&p=j.
I got my other varieties from Forestfarm.
Good luck.

Michele...we have deodara cedar in PA and I haven't heard horror stories about it not surviving.
Those junipers certainly fit the size constraints. I will check with my customer about the gray color. I have a feeling she will want (green) so it doesn't blend so well into the fence.
Thanks for the link to Musser Forests website...it's great!!!
I love those cedars but always resisted because of the zone. I'm going for it now. Thanks!
My fav narrow green thing is Thuja 'Emerald'. This photo shows the "lacy" look I like.

It's listed in the "Plants for the upper Mid West" site so I figure it would be ok for you.

That is a good plant for the space, but the customer does not want any arborvitae.
I can't get the link to work...am I doing something wrong?
Hmmm. When I click on it I go right to it. It's a photo of that Thuja. K
Hey...it worked this morning! Thanks
How about Sky Pencil. It may too narrow.

I bought mine from Wayside. It was small to begin with and has not grown much. I have had it for 2 years.

How about a serpentine weeping Blue Atlas cedar?

Another good choice Kachinagirl. I've already sent pictures of this to my customer!
