Advice needed- Setting up Birdhouses

I have two birdhouses I'd like to set up in my back garden.
My problem is I don't have a tree large enough to hang the house from a branch.
I could attach it to the wood fence, but that's only 6ft high, so the house would be maybe 5.5 feet from the ground.
I have a feeling that's not high enough or safe enough. correct?
If I attach them to a post, how high should they be?
What are my options or can you suggest a site that would give me information of setting up a birdhouse?
