Why is that? Why flies? Do they smell the compost/manure?
I never noticed this last year. (I am new at gardening.)
Is this normal? I see about 2-3 bees come by for the flowers but about 4 flies buzzing around.
Is there anything I can do for this?

I see bees but I also see flies around my veggies
There are lots of different kinds of flies that would be there for different reasons. If you are only seeing 4 I wouldn't worry about it and definately wouldn't do anything to deter them. AFAIK there are no plant diseases that they can spread. (If anyone knows differently please let me know.) They can be pollinators too depending on the fly and the type of plant.
I agree with Kerry...unless there are swarms of them the flies are probably temporary visitors. You're fortunate to see bees...the national populations have been drastically reduced by disease and pesticides. We need to be more tolerant of wasps and similar creatures because they are also good pollinators.
