Moving FIles from Desktop to a Folder

Before i reformatted my computer, when I would Drag and drop desktop files into a folder, they would automatically delete from the desktop. since i reformatted, they just go into the new folder and also stay on the desktop. Im sure this is a simple setting, but does anyone know how to change it?
