Trouble in the hen house

We are lucky here, the only real predator apart from the fox is of the bureaucratic kind and they get everywhere all over the world.

So it's strange to hear a big fuss in the hen pen. The cats and dog have long since stopped trying to bother our little flock of 6 birds, who chase said cats and dog around the garden if they are disturbing them, a swift sharp peck on the head is enough to put even the determined BengalX cat off her big game hunting expeditions.

Mom called me the other night with the following story. There was indeed a huge fuss in the hen pen. The culprit was a ferret stuck half way through the chickenwire. Mom went out there with an oven glove and a cat carrier and managed to pull the ferret through the wire and get him into the carrier before he could escape. Wild ferrets are rare in our little part of the world and she was just about to take it down to the local vets when a woman came running down the road in a panic. 'Have you seen a ferret?' she asked. Mom said he had been after the chickens and the woman replied, 'Oh No he wouldn't hurt them, hes' never seen a chicken before'. LOL as if ferrets have food identification lessons.....
