Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Hi Paul

Tried to download the msue first page on educational opportunities and got a page error.....my question is....are these one night classes, or continuing education?? I would not mind coming down to go to a few, as it would be worth it even though I have fulfilled all of my educational hours for Master Gardener re-certification. You can never know enough.

For those of you who live in the Detroit area and can get to some of these classes, you have got to hear Janet Macunovich. She is wonderful and very informative. Also wonderful is Nancy Lindley from Great Lakes Roses. She re-educated me on Roses and now I have finally learned how to grow these temperamental beauties in Northern Michigan. Both ladies have books which I have added to my library. A must see...

Program: Create Your Own GARDEN PLAQUE
With Paula Kraus

Bring your imagination and a design (8 x 10 drawing/ photo / picture)
to
create your unique terra cotta garden plaque, or bird feeder. Past
participants have brought coloring book pages (Iris or any other
pictures), or blown up copies of a plaque design found in a book,
magazine, or garden art catalog, as well as their own designs. You will
use this design to transfer the image to the clay in proportion to the
slab size. Most people trace the outline of the image on the clay. You
may
also want to bring any open top cookie cutters, rubber stamps (some
will
work, some won't), textured fabric, or found objects to imprint a
design
into the clay, which will enhance your design. Dress to play.

Cost to Iris Club members is $9.00 each, and $18.00 to non-members.
Reservations are not needed, but if you know you will be attending,
contact Margaret Perdue so we will have an idea of how much clay to
provide. 248-547-4380 margrettperdue@yahoo.com

Purple Loosestrife Project 2005 Update

To Purple Loosestrife Project Cooperators:

Many of you know that the closure of the USDA Niles lab in
July of 2004 has changed the way our project will be
conducted in the future. Without a lab colony of beetles
to support rearing projects, efforts will need to shift to
supporting field collection and release of Galerucella.
Fortunately, this comes at a time when Galerucella are
quite widely established in the state.

Our main challenge at this point is to link people who want
to cooperate with us in controlling loosestrife to the sites
where field collection is possible. We have a handful of
volunteers who are willing to host anyone who wants to
collect beetles this year. If you or anyone you know
would like to collect and distribute a new colony of
beetles, please see our website
www.miseagrant.umich.edu/pp and click on "Get Started."

This would make a great service project for youth and will
provide a wonderful opportunity to publicize the good work
of volunteers in controlling purple loosestrife.

Beetle collection day(s) will occur this coming May-June.
Purple Loosestrife Project "hosts" will provide access
to a site and some supervision. (We will be adding a few
more host locations to the website as they become
available.) The "collectors" will provide the labor and
equipment when they gather their own brood of beetles;
there are details about this on the website, too.

Thank you for your continued help in restoring our
wetlands!
