Hey, I live in PA and there is kind of a cult of Morel mushroom hunters that are like fishermen keeping the prize fishing hole a secret. I thought I would go walking around and try to find some of these wild tasty treats during the season. They say they grow specifically around dead elm trees. Problem is, I wouldn't know what a dead elm looked like if I smacked my head on a lower branch!
Any help on this subject?
Thanks a bunch!!!
Dead Elm Trees?
Find a few live elm trees and study their growth form and bark. The morels are reputed to grow around elms when they have been dead just long enough to begin shedding bark. But they also can be found coming up in my gravel driveway more than 200 feet from any elms, so go figure!
