I have bought fish emulsion, superthrive, messenger, Vf-11 to water and maintain my perennial/vegetables. I use compost also. Am I over doing it? Which is the best?
Thanks,
Linda
Different additives, which is the best.
You need to get a soil test and see what ammendents you need.

Fish emulsion is a fertilizer and is particularily good on plants which require nitrogen, e.g. green plants (hostas, ferns, etc). Apply diluted. Superthrive, messenger, vf-11 etc are supposed to add "vitamins" to the soil. I will not get on a soap box.. BUT.. these "snake oil" products are really not necerssary if you use compost which provide a range of beneficial additives, too.
E.g. use fish emulsion as a nitrogen rich fertilizer but not too much on flowering plants (or you can surpress flowering). You do not need the other stuff, if you are already using compost.
For flowering plants/vegetables, use a vegetable type fertilizer such as 20-20-20, 10-20-20, 5-10-10, 15-30-15, etc.
