Can anyone help?

I am trying to shrink the size of photos for faster transmission. I usually shoot at the lowest resolution the camera provides --- 640X480 -- . The photos I take portrait (up and down) usually produce 58K, or so. The landscape (left to right) are 100+k, or so.

My digital camera is a 3mega pixels Dimage Z1, from Konica Minolta. I've seldom used the maximum setting, unless I want an extreme print enlargement.
