moss in flower beds

Battle Ground, WA(Zone 8a)

What is your collective wisdom about getting rid of moss in your flower beds? We have no desire to spray it with some sort of moss killer and were wondering if covering it with compost would kill it or encourage it. Is there another way? We have scraped it off some of the beds but of course end up taking whatever is on the surface of the bed with it. We'd love your wisdom on this issue.

Why not just let it work for you? Presence of moss usually indicates adequate shade and a ph factor on the acidic side. It maintains itself without allowing weeds - it is favored in many gardens for the serene mood it can create. See: www.mossacres.com

Now I am not an expert. I have always read moss likes very "lean" conditions to grow. So if you prepare your beds for planting and add compost and other goodies it will go away.

A small bit of lime will get rid of it easily....works great for me.

agreed - a little lime and move the moss where you might want it. I like its carpet look so I cultivate it in some areas.
