Knitting Help Please

I have just started knitting and am surprised at how well I can do it (tried to learn in the past with no luck, however, I seem to have one problem.

Last night I was trying to knit a scarf and I cast on 14 stitches and then as I was knitting I suddenly realized that I had way more than 14 stitches (list 38). I tried again on my practice yarn and for sure every other time I seem to get an extra stitch. I am only using the knit stitch not the pearl stitch. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong.

If you have pictures or a website that would help I would appreciate it too.
