Database?

Farmington, ME(Zone 4b)

Is there a database just for iris?

Deer River, MN(Zone 3b)

The AIS is in the process of putting all iris registration data into searchable online databases. So far, complete registration data (no photos) is online for irises registered between 1960-1999, and abbreviated data is available for all irises through 2003.

You can find the AIS databases here:

Hooked, there sure is.................. Right here at Dave's Garden. (as well as databases for corn, daylilies, roses, tomatoes, hostas, and on and on.
http://davesgarden.com/pf/finder/index.php?sname=Iris&submit=submit

** If you lose this link, to get to it.................... just go to the *top* of any page while you are at this site, click on the tab that reads "PlantFiles". It'll take you to THIS * "Welcome to PlantFiles, your plant database" page:
http://davesgarden.com/pf/

Once you are on that page, go to where it says "Browse popular cultivars".

See where it says: "Please select the kind of plant you want to browse":?

Click on the down arrow on "Select from below..." (next to submit)

In aphabetical order you'll find "Iris". Click on the word "iris", then on the word "submit."

Then - - there you are on the main iris page!!!!...................(showing you some of the photos which are currently being added today to the iris database).

There you will also see an alphabetical list (A,B,C,D, etc) If you want so see a certain named variety - - just click on that letter and go looking for it. (It'll show you how many pages of irises start with that letter, and all of those photos will be in alphabetical order as well.)

You won't believe all the irises pictured there!!

I hope you have hours and hours to see all of these iris photos! (If not come back and see the others you've missed later) It is so amazing!! Have fun!

~Margie

I'm editing this post to say the one here at Dave's is not a complete list, (as it too is being added to each day) but it *IS* the most complete database list with photos!!!

Thanks Laurie,
I had the AIS. I was looking for photos.

Margie thanks for the Plantfile (browse) tip.

Deer River, MN(Zone 3b)

For photos, the best source is the Plant Database to which Margie referred you here at DG. You can also find many iris photos through the Google image search at:

http://images.google.com/

To use Google effectively, type your search criteria in like so (including the quotation marks):

"Honky Tonk Blues" iris

Happy hunting,

Thanks I'm still looking!

Many of the iris seller's have excellent photos. http://www.leotas-iris.com/ has browsing by photo and by name.

Thanks, I've browsed there. I'm looking for mostly older ones. The Argyle and HIPs sites had alot. I'm finding more on the plantfile with the browse, then I thought I would. Thanks again for your help.

Sometimes, if you want to see a particular cultivar on Dave's garden, it's easier to use google. Just type bearded iris "Name of cultivar" (use quotes). Dave's garden should come up. Don't use the newsletter link. But other links will take you directly to the page of the item so you don't have to wander around pages. (sometimes there are a lot of pages for one letter). Sometimes the Images doesn't work and won't pull up pictures that are on DG. But sometimes it will pick up pictures elsewhere.

If you've googled the named Iris, you might see the names of vendors who have the items for sale. They will either have pictures or descriptions or both. Some won't be open until the end of February or March. Some are closed for now but still have pictures up. Napa Iris Garden, Schreiner's, Suttons, Argyle Acres and Mid-America, Nicholl's are a few whose web sites are available for viewing. The following thread is a discussion about when the Iris houses will be open in the spring. You might want to put it on your watch list.

doss thanks, Napa was one I hadn't looked at!

The other thing you can do is go through the garden watch dog. Just type in Iris and all of the sellers will be there - with links and reviews. So if you've missed one, you can take a peek. And Napa does have a pretty site. Cooley's is another good one. Iris to die for! Can't believe I forgot it.
