What do you use to lower your Cholestoral?

My Dr. had me on Lipitor, but I stopped taking it after a friend had bad reactions to it. My Cholesteral is now up to 249 - shouldn't be higher then 200. I was wondering if there is anything natural - that doesn't have loads of possible bad side effects? Thought this might make for a good discussion.
