Novelty Tall Bearded Iris

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

This is the most amazing iris to me...................... mainly because of it's form. It's a "novelty" iris, unlike any other. It won't be mistaken by any other name either. This is PINK MAGNOLIA.

Not only is the form unique, but many times the top petals will fall - so it looks as if there are no standards. See link:

Other times the petals will stand or almost stand, so it looks as if it has standards. See picture below:

margiempv, is there alot of different novelty irises? where would i look for them? belinda

Belinda,

There are not too many novelty irises that I am aware of. I know there must be a few more out there, but, at the moment I can't think of any, but if I do I'll post it. "Flatties" may still be considered novelty irises, but there are quite a few of those and they are being used more & more in hybridizing. They also have the traditional look to their petals, not rounded like this one.

I bought mine from Mid-America last year. Later in the spring - - you can see if it is offered again. I have a hunch it may be.

When I saw PINK MAGNOLIA blooming at their garden, I could hardly believe my eyes. It stopped me dead in my tracks!!! I'm guessing it is either not widely known or distributed, or both.

Belinda, (and anyone else who may be interested)

"Full House" is the name of another novelty iris. I don't have a photo of it, because I don't grow it, nor have I seen it grown. Here is link to the garden web - where they are discussing it and it has a photo there too.

It has five standards and five falls. Certainly is different! Check it out.

hmmm. How strong are these new iris? Iowa winters are pretty nasty...

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

Wanda, I' ve never grown or seen FULL HOUSE in person. But, I've seen how well PINK MAGNOLIA does in Oregon. Their winters seem cold to me with the snow and all, but I personally don't know how it compares to Iowa.

I'm growing PINK MAGNOLIA for the first time this year, so I'll see how it does in a desert climate. They have the same chromosome count (I believe) as all other TB's, so I expect like many iris............. either they will adapt to their new climate or they won't. I find sometimes an iris will adapt immediately, or it may take up to four years, or in some instances they won't adapt ...............no matter what.

It's not always the climate's fault either. Sometimes weak, sickly-like irises get introduced into the public market when they really should have been tossed.

I"ll let you know how PINK MAGNOLIA grows for me. Maybe that will help to see how adaptable it is.

Got to have it! This is one of the neatest Iris' I've seen. I bought a reblooming White Iris from Park's a few years back. It bloomed 3 times this year! The blooms were huge and had such a sweet smell. The last bloom was in Sept. I ordered a bunch in various colors more and gave them a good home in my garden.

Puttytat was a sweetheart and told me about a couple of other Novelty irises. Here are a few of them - - that are a bit different from "Pink Magnolia" - -

"Sixpack" is the name of one. See photo at this link:

Another one is similar - "White Parasol" - only it's in white.

And the there's "Judy Mogil". A combination of both colors.

These are also known as "flatties" and are slowly becoming more common. Fred Kerr just introduced another one in 2004. See photo on this link:

I may be wrong, but it looks as if Fred Kerr's new Introduction has a lot more ruffleing going on.
