water garden iris

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

I felt that my iris in the water garden didnt do really well this year. They are water iris (I cant remember the name right now). Is there a trick to this? Maybe I had them too deep or too shallow? I want to work on this next spring.

A lot of folks try to grow irises in water that aren't actually water irises. It's important that you try to remember what type(s) of iris you had in your water garden. Among the irises that can grow with their rhizomes submerged are pseudacorus, versicolor, and LAs. Several more like JIs, setosa, and even some Sibs can tolerate being submerged for varying lengths of time, but they prefer well drained, acid soil with ample water and mulch. Whether you grow in soil or water, the "water" irises all prefer and/or require an acid growing environment, so test the pH of your soil and water.

I was growing Black Gamecock which is a water iris. However, since my fish dont want acid water, that may be part of my problem !
