Tomtom, I've never cared much for flowering kale but you have a way of arranging things that can quickly change my mind. Obviously, flowering kale comes in many different shapes and sizes. Love those white ones. Very elegant.

Tomtom...this was my first year to grow the ornamental Kales and I was SO impressed with the length of their season! They are amazing plants...so much so that I'm definitely planning on having a LOT of plants started for next year.

Your varieties and arrangments are wonderful! Thanks for the inspiration!

To be frank with you, cherishlife,I didn't care much for this Kales either
--till a few years ago.
when I came aware of their ornamental availability , I started to grow them in containers.
They barely grow up in wintertime and you might pace them in practically whatever way you'd like.
Just have a try, I insist.

Yes, Julie, Kales are a must for autumn to winter just like Coleus are for summer.
They are constant pleasure in giving you a variety of arrangements.
Looking anxiously forward to seeing your Kale containers!

I am just in love with your pure white ones and bright red ones, they look like sea coral to me. Do you happen to know the latin names for them? I looked in the PDB and can't find them. If you have any information on them, that would be valuable information to add to the Plants Database.
Thanks, Sherri

What's the red-leafed plant in the last photo?

OSAKA, Japan(Zone 9b)

Hi, Sherri,
Their Latin name is Brassica oleracea var. acephala.
The white and red ones in the left pic I posted first are
called 'Kujaku' in Japanese, which means ' peacock' .
I don't know what they are called in English though.

Darius ,
It's Nandina domestica cv. Otafukunanten.
It turns red in autumn.

I've had a nandina, don't know which one, but didn't get that red. Love it!

TomTom--I love your Kale containers. Do you grow them from seed or find all your different varieties at your garden center? Just lovely. t.

OSAKA, Japan(Zone 9b)

darius,
I have some Nandinas too.Their leaves don't get red
but they bear cute red fruits.
This 'Otafukunanten' is dwarf and turns beautifully red .
We often use this as an eyecatcher in new year's containers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabasco,
I sowed three species of Kales this year.
These are pics of Kales I 've grown from seeds.
The larger ones ,called 'Kanzashi' and about 2 feet across,
are practically never put on the market because of their size.
So I sow and grow them every year.
Kales are extremely easy to germinate and grow.
When you sow them, you may get them more than you can expect.
I buy from stores those of which I need only a few.
