need help on solder iron

i would like to purchase a soldering iron. i want to use it for jewelry making and crafts, including sterling silver and 14kt gold and other metals too. so i need something that can do fine work and something that can solder copper pipes too if i want.
i have no knowledge of these things. none, zero, zip.....so help me please!!!!!!!
