One of my chickens died

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

I am so upset, my husband went to collect the eggs and one had died, one of my leghorns. I had 11 chickens, 5 rode island reds and 6 silver specked leghorns. This chicken seemed fine yesterday and this morning, it didn't appear to be sick. But what was most disturbing to me was, a couple of the chickens were pecking at this dead chicken, do you think they could have killed it? This chicken was born in March of this year so it's not because of age. This is the first time at this forum for me, just discovered it. These girls use to run free until they wouldn't stay out of my neighbors drive way. Now there in a pen that my husband built for them. Thanks for your help.
