rosary beads from India

Great Falls, MT

These seeds are small, red and have a black spot in the center. I have a necklace made out of them and would like to get some more to make more necklaces. I have been told that they are poisonous so I will not leave them laying around for my dogs or huband to chew on. Thank you

Polksalit... Those "beads" are also found in abundance in the Carribean islands as well. They ARE poisonous but only if the hard shell is cracked. I used to know the name, LOL.

There used to be a lot of "native style" island imports from Cuba and the Bahamas that used these beads as "eyes".

The plant you are looking for is the Rosary Pea Abrus precatorius http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/54030/index.html . It is also found in Australia, but only in the Northern parts, a long way from here.

Thanks for posting the name, and the PDB hyperlink!

They are also grown in Florida - south Florida anyway. I have some - I can trade or I have them for sale in my Member Store :
