Seeking Japanese Maple Owners

Lamar, AR(Zone 7a)

Take a look at my tree, is this growth normal? Or should I be pruning? The growth doesn't seem balanced.

The only pruning I ever did on my 2 JapMaples was either where branches crossed, or a long and gangly branch grew out of proportion to the rest of the tree.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

If it were my tree I'd prune those odd branches off....I have done minimal pruning on my maples....mostly just to keep them in shape and away from paths and walkways.

Oakland, CA(Zone 9b)

I think it needs more sun, seems to be stretching for light.

Decatur, IN(Zone 5a)

Mine is in full sun all day & it does the same thing. I have trimmed them off before too.

It looks like a young plant. They will do that as young plants - put their energy into growth, whether it be up or out (depending on the growth habit of the plant). I have a few young maples that look like they have bad hair cuts because they've got a few tall skinny branches sticking up out of the rest of the growth. I don't think it's unusual. It's just trying to spread! You can prune it to shape.
