If I grow my tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets--- cant I just run my black rubber water lines to lie on top of the buckets with a hole that will run-drip water into each bucket? I can calulate the time it should be on manually----and using a moisture meter to make sure they have enough water.

Should be no problem, just inspect regularely that the small holes in the hose and the drain in the buckets are not blocked.
