Instantly age new pots & making moss

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

If you are like me and don't like those new looking pots I age mine instantly by rubbing them with moss or grass. The more you rub the greener they get. Below are some before and afters I did today of new concrete pots.

Also has anybody made Moss for applying to containers?
I have a recipe but have yet to try in.
Heres it is for those who might like to try it.

In an old blender blend until liquefied:
3 cups potters clay (available at craft stores)
1 cup liquid fish emulsion
1 cup moss
Paint onto concrete or Terracotta pottery.
Keep in shady spot
Mist if dry/don't allow to get real dry
Your pot will grow moss in 2 months to 1 year.
I assume it might be too late in cold zones to try this.

Those look great!

I have heard that painting buttermilk ages them too although I have yet to try.

Hi, Cottage Rose - How thick do you put this stuff on the pot? I'm assuming you have to use all of it since it would probably dry and harden if you stored it, right?

I heard of painting a clay pot with yogart ???
I like the looks of your pot!

I have yet to try the moss treatment.
I simply rubbed the above concrete pots with grass.
What does the buttermilk do?

Makes mold, I guess! lol

I thought that my hypertuffa book had a recipe using manure tea painted on but I can't find it offhand. Must be another book- will look and get back.

And I've been scrubbing all that algae off my pots every fall! LOL!

I read that y ou are supposed to put some moss in the blender with the yogurt, and that will get the moss growing on your pots when you put it on.
Certainly a possibility I guess.

I'll add another one...try beer! (No! Don't DRINK it first...that'll *never* work. LOL)

Our weather is usually right for the growth of algae and moss. If you leave anything long enough, it is carpeted in green. This summer it was much drier and much hotter. The moss, lichen and liverwort were less enthusiastic than usual.

julie beer???

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Yep! Beer. From what I've read, you just paint/pour it on the pot and let it sit. Something about the yeast or something makes moss grow. I haven't tried it yet...but the next time my son leaves a can on my patio because it's "warm" guess where it's going to end up! :-D

Wow! I wonder what other foods we could experiment with? Sounds like fun.
