I had a Grey Mammoth sunflower that was just about to bloom - then hung it's head and died...When I finally cut it down, the bottom of the stalk had a hollow area in it, like a borer of some sort got to it. All the other sunflowers did the same thing. I ordered a variety of new sunflower seeds last week, and really hope someone with experience can help me so I can prevent this same problem next year?
Borers?
First try to determine what type of borer had infected your Sunflower and then you can google for possible control.
Two guesses of mine would be Sunflower Stem Weevil http://images.google.ca/images?q=Sunflower%20stem%20weevil&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi and Sunflower Stem Borer http://images.google.ca/images?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=Sunflower+stem+borer&btnG=Search
Hope you'll find what you are looking for.
