Do you think I can successfully plant irises under my mature maple tree? I have a small climbing hydrangea there that is doing fine. The tree has been limbed up to about 15 feet. The spot gets plenty of sun in the spring, and then less as the tree leafs out. It certainly isn't a wet spot, so I wouldn't have to worry about rotting. Or should I just pick another spot all together?
Thanks!
under tree?
I am a member of our local iris society and this past spring we had a garden tour. I saw many irises blooming in what I consider dense shade. Since your maple tree is diciduous it should get pleny of sun when the leaves are gone.
I have irises planted behind my now huge Hibiscus that get shades most to the summer. In the spring, the iris bloom fine and are done before the Hibiscus even wakes up.
Thanks! That's what I was hoping to hear!
I'm glad to hear it too! I ordered a number of new iris this summer and have them in a bed that they are going to outgrow within a year or two. I have another bed under a Maple tree that I have been using as a shade garden, but since half the huge tree broke off a few years ago, it really is a little too sunny for my hostas to do well. I've been thinking about adding some compost to improve the soil and redoing the bed as mostly Iris. It is rather dry and maybe half shade, so it sounds like Iris should do OK there. Guess that gives me until next summer when I divide my Iris to get it re-done. Am excited about seeing all my new Iris bloom next spring! I've been growing the same 4 for number of years and will welcome some new faces.

Yea ha, I like that idea.

Does anyone grow Mother Earth? I was wondering if it is really a rebloomer. It is advertised so. A beautiful bicolor. Well, I will be happy even if it is isn't.
Maybe a re-bloomer in your area. I've seen Immortality rebloom last year & Clarence tried. No sight of them this year yet.
