making chair pads

I have 3 old bentwood chairs. Is that the name? They have round chair seats. I have spray painted them and want to add padded seats, not loose pillow seats. Tack or staple the covered pads to the wooden chair. I have seen them but don't know how the pad was attached. Have any of you ever done this? I have done my dining room chairs but this is different because there is no pad; I am making one for the chair. I think I have seen this type of chair with brass tacks securing the pad or was it a dream? Anxious to get advice. Many thanks.
