Can anyone tell me what I did wrong (Pumpkin Question)

Early May we started a Pumpkin Vine. It grew fast and by late June the Vine was thick and had several flowers come out daily. Then we had a week long rain spell and the vine at the root started getting mushy. Holes in the vine started to appear and in three weeks the plant was dead. Anyone know what went wrong?
