....also inherited the palm growing in the greenhouse that is totally infested with scale! We are talking scale on top of scale!! I have limited money, but I would like to get rid of the scale and keep the palm if at all possible. Can I drench the soil at the base with some kind of home made concoction that will act as a systemic and get rid of the evil things? The palm is about 10 feet tall with many fans so washing the entire thing with soap and alcohol would take days upon days. Was wondering if I cut off the fans and then treat the stump and soil with a soap/water mix, will the fans grow back? How about a bug bomb? Any help would be so very welcome, thank you in advance!

Just moved, got a great greenhouse but......
Within a greenhouse biological control via parasitic wasps and/or natural predators is possible but you first have to determine which type of scale you are infested with to get the right type of biological control.
ACK!!! There are different kids of the buggers?! UGH, well, they are brownish, does that help? How do you get an ID on these?
Thanks,
Raven
Well even mealies are within the "scale group" . I believe there are several thousand different scale species but only a few are found on houseplants (I hope LOL):
soft brown scale
oystershell scale
florida / california red scale
purple scale
to name a few.
Maybe its best to bring some to your local extension office for identification and control recommendations.
enjoy :)

Enjoy?! Are you insane?! I hate these things and the thought of them touching me sends shivers up my spine!! Thanks for your help though.
