I need some advise on collecting seeds from a poppy plant. I've had that plant for about 4 years I'm afraid to divide it because of the tap root, but It doesn't seem to get any off-sets to dig up. I would really like more of this poppy in my garden but am unsure how to get the seed.
Thanks
Collecting Poppy seeds
Do you see round pods forming after the poppies have bloomed and the petals have dropped? If so, when they turn brown, pick the pods carefully - seed may fall out. If it has not developed some pods, then perhaps this is some type of poppy which doesn't make seed.
Poppy seed is one you can't go wrong with. The seed comes in a pot on top of the stalk, where the flower was, with a frilly lid. When the seeds are mature, little holes open all round the top and the seed gets tipped out when the stalk sways in the wind. It's easy to collect, as it won't all have fallen out before you get there. There are some pictures of poppy seed pods at the top of this page: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/seedsave/
