Snails.. :(

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

We've had so much rain this Spring and Summer that I'm fighting snails. I've put the snail bait stuff around all my gardens but it seems to be a short lived solution. I have wayyy too many gardens to use egg shells. And let me tell you how gross they are to step on in bare feet early in the morning. ewwwwwww....... It puts new meaning to the song "slip sliding away".

Ideas?

try pouring stale beer into a shallow container to trap the pesky critters.

I do save ALL my egg shells and if I don't use them up right away, I store in ziplock bags and place in the freezer.

Sledder, have only been trying this since this year and telling everyone I can cause it SEEMS to have worked, coffee grounds. They're free and plentiful, starbucks packs them for you, or any local donut shop would throw them in a bucket for u. At first they give you that, What the hell are you thinking? , look and then after an explanation they seem very helpful.
Its been a soggy mess of a year here and not a slug or snail to be found, no blackspot on my roses either. Give it a try, and be generous if you get a lot. I was only using them on my hostas and found out many other plants love them and the neighborhood cats can't stand them so they stopped digging up my garden. Drop a line and let me know how it goes.

Now coffee grounds I can get easily. What do you do? Just toss it around? Can it be put on your grass also? I see you're in Western NY so you know exactly what I mean with all this wet weather.

I know a lady who just buys cheap bear and poors it straight into her plants to kill the slugs, hasnt harmed one plant and the slugs are no more.

Sled, yes u can lay coffee grounds out thick like a mulch or spread, won't harm grass either. The best part is that even after a hard rain, their still there, no need to reapply. And they're free to begin with, if you have access to them take'em and run, start a pile with just them and apply where needed any time of year.

Wait! I read that the coffee grounds kill our beloved worms, too! Is this true? SOmething about it paralyzing the slugs & worms... death to both? This is the only reason I have not resorted to using coffee to get rid of the slugs. Is there any truth to this? And another thing - slugs DON'T WASH OFF!!!! And they make you itch. Just too gross.

If you have time and feel like hunting them out I use ammonia in a spray bottle...It doesn't hurt your plants but does melt the slugs.......I did major spraying early on when the young were everywhere and now I only find a big one here and there....Went out the morning after the rain and some in grass and just spray and voila...they are done.....Keep the bottle with you when you are touring your lawns and gardens and you will eliminate alot fast....Check under stones, boards, places they like to hide and get rid of several at a time...Hope this helps.....

JRush...nope on the coffee grounds and earthworms.

I raise worms and they LOVE coffee grounds! They get the majority of my every-morning grounds, along w/other kitchen compost materials.

The slugs probably just hate "sliming" their way thru the grounds and it deters them.

Earthwormlover wants you to know I do love coffee grounds, yummy, just what I need in the morning.

Hope to see ya around!
Keep smilin'!
