newbie tree buyer - italian cypress bought with drooping top

Hawthorne, CA(Zone 10b)

I don't know if there is a real problem, but having heard that trees should be allowed to grow without staking worries me.
I just bought several 9-10 ft tall italian cypress from a nursery in 15 gal containers.
After getting them home I took off the tape holding them to their stakes, and they have pronounced droop at the top. I'm worried they won't grow straight anymore.
Will they be ok after proper planting and perhaps loose staking? Or has the nursery taken advantage of my inexperience?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
