Pics of others are very dark-help

Does anyone else have this problem. Sometimes I can't even make out what the picture is. I have my monitor set to the greatest brightness and contrast. I wonder if my monitor is going out? I have checked the display and played with controls but didn't do anything but change colors for my text. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jenny
